The IPL Auction
I woke up today and read an article in TOI that Shah Rukh Khan is searching for a role for Ganguly to play in ‘his’ team Kolkata Knight Riders. This brings us to the question, why all this drama?
The IPL auction was none but shocking to some extent. Players like Gayle, Ganguly, Boucher, Lara, Gibbs didn’t got sold to any franchisees. From cricketing perspective this is quite unexpected as the caliber of this players are beyond doubt. But are the reasons entirely oriented to cricket? No. Definitely not. Yes, of course, there are some reasons which are related to cricket like some of these players are not playing right now (Ganguly, Lara). So there is a considerable amount of doubt that they will continue to play for the franchisee for the next three years. And there will be the good old performance issue. But is this applicable for Bouchers and Gibbs?
IPL is first and foremost Corporate Cricket. The people involved in this event are majorly non-cricket playing guys who do only one thing pretty well….MAKING PROFIT. For them, IPL is another source of profiting. We all know what profit is, right? Total income minus Investment. Buying players in the IPL auction is the investment. So, the players have to give back profit which includes a pretty nice performance on and off the field.
And of course there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Who are we to say to someone that he/she have to respect a player and buy/bid for him even though the latter is probably incapable of producing good results?
On the hand, Ganguly is too great a man to be insulted by this. Ganguly is probably not even bothered. Yes, we love him, respect him. He deserves every bit of it. But even the legend himself is not above the business-oriented system of the IPL.
Shah Rukh’s gesture of giving a place to Ganguly in KKR is also nothing but a proof of his business-mindedness. He is sensing that there will be a lack of support for ‘his’ team KKR as there is no Ganguly. He is making this gesture because he knows that even the presence of Ganguly is enough to fill Eden Gardens.
I urge the people not to boycott KKR due to the absence of Ganguly, not to hate Shah Rukh for his business-mindedness and to watch IPL and KKR with the same enthusiasm as the previous years. Like it or not, even without Ganguly, KKR has built a hell of a team.
ENJOY THE IPL……..!!!!
