Why I liked Jagga Jasoos?
First things first! Ranbir Kapoor is the best mainstream lead actor we
have today. He is so like his grandfather, sometimes it really takes you
back to those days.
And to those days back it is! Jagga Jasoos starts by remembering Raj Kapoor, one of the innumerable inspirations this movie has taken from, and takes you on a whacky journey which ends on a somewhat bumpy note but entertains you through out.
Inspired by the right things
The most on the face inspiration is from Tintin and it is not only limited to the hairstyle of Ranbir. The adventure, the investigation, the characters - all will remind you of the legendary Herge comics. And that's definitely not a bad thing.
Then there is the aforementioned Raj Kapoor feel-good vibe.
There were 2 references towards the climax of the movie which were direct homage to one of the greatest directors of all time.
A Live Action Disney movie in Hindi
This is probably the first time in Bollywood that the Disney title graphics is followed by what Disney does well. This is an out an out comedy musical adventure. Grand choreographed musical numbers, over-the-top characters, wacky and cheesy comic set-pieces and an over-arching adventure. All there and executed really well. All the songs were well incorporated in the movie except one, "Dil ullu ka Pattha", which was forced. If only it would have been turned up more in the second half. Sadly it didn't. It started to drift towards bollywoodity. Thankfully, the film ended before it became full Bollywood. There's also a weird sequence of exposition which is not at all good. Also, the editing seemed a bit choppy and rushed.
The actors
They carried the movie. Special mention to Saswata, Saurabh Shukla and the kid who played young Ranbir. The only weak link is Katrina. She looked out of place, blank and that accent didn't work. They used a different voice for the voice over which was supposed to be done by Katrina's character. Weird!
All in all, this is something entirely new thing tried and executed well enough to deserve your visit to the theater. The burst of color in each frame along with melodious dialogue should suffice to take you along. Apparently the movie went through a lot of re-shoots and it definitely suffered from it. The story and screenplay is very jumbled at times. But "Jagga Jasoos" still remains a pretty enjoyable movie and promising to be better in the sequel.
Thanks!
